“When I served on conscription, there was a selection of volunteers for North Asia. They accepted only the most trained Komsomol members, and the chief of staff personally conducted a conversation with each soldier. Without hesitation, I agreed, because I understood that it was my duty. And a month later, in March 1980, we were sent to the hot and dusty city of Bagram in Afghanistan. We were responsible for preparing helicopters for combat sorties, carried out guard duty, guarded military equipment, and resisted seasoned militants. Every day we risked our lives for the sake of fulfilling our international duty, protecting peaceful Afghan residents and the distant frontiers of our Fatherland. Therefore, I wish you to always remember the Oath you have taken and to carry out the assigned tasks with valor,” said the internationalist warrior Nikolai Kanev.
