A group of Chinese scientists has discovered a gene in rice that can increase its resistance to drought. This was reported on Friday by the Xinhua news agency.

The discovery was made by specialists of the Shanghai Agrobiological Genetic Center. Scientists have found out that the OsRINGzf1 gene can reduce water loss by cells by reducing water channels in them, thus allowing the culture to retain water better in drought conditions.

To identify this gene, the agency reports, experts had to compare many varieties of rice grown in drought conditions and in a favorable environment. Studies have shown that overexpression of this gene increases rice's resistance to lack of moisture and salt stress, and its removal makes the crop vulnerable to drought.

In the future, the appropriate technology can help reduce the loss of rice yields in drought conditions. Details of this study are published in the scientific journal Plant Biotechnology.
