Kazakh scientists restore soil fertility

Sweet clover is recognized as an excellent phytomeliorant - the culture is unpretentious to soils and forms high yields where alfalfa barely survives.

Scientists of the LLP "Kazakh Research Institute of Rice named after Ibray Zhakhaev" are conducting experiments on demonstration plots for large-scale replication of crops that prevent salinization and restore irrigated lands in the Kyzylorda region. The work is carried out within the framework of the project "Integrated management of natural resources in drought-prone and saline areas of agricultural production in Central Asia and Turkey".

General Director of the enterprise B Duysembekov, the technology of desalinization of irrigated soils occurs due to the cultivation of a highly productive variety of sweet clover "Alaula" of local selection.

Sweet clover has a high protein content, nitrogen retention capacity, stability, high feed and seed productivity, and also the excellent qualities of the honey plant. This is an excellent phytomeliorant  —  the culture is unpretentious to soils and forms high yields where alfalfa barely survives. In the Kyzylorda region, several types of sweet clover are currently cultivated: white, yellow, Volga and notched. All these species are salt-resistant, drought-resistant and winter-hardy, which is simply necessary in the harsh conditions of the Kazakhstan Aral Sea region. Plant residues help improve soil fertility.

According to project leader Zh. Baimanov, sweet clover is distinguished by rather high productivity of green mass and seeds, ecological plasticity, high resistance to adverse environmental factors and is suitable for cultivation on marginal soils. Scientists have bred varieties of sweet clover Alaula with a minimum content of coumarin, which is dangerous for cattle.

In the fall of 2019, under the guidance of specialists from the institute, autumn plowing of rice fields was carried out to a depth of 25-27 cm, and in early spring - leveling and harrowing.< br>

In March, only 4 mm of precipitation fell in the pilot zone, while the long-term average was 17.0 mm, which is more than four times lower than the norm. This was the reason for the rather low field germination, which ranged from 14 to 31%. The crops were treated for pests. Currently, all farms are in the branching phase. 

Scientists have no doubt that sweet clover will save saline lands and restore their fertility, but experiments continue.
