Chinese scientists continue to explore the Arctic

The Chinese icebreaker Xuelong-2 has returned to Shanghai after a 75-day expedition to the Arctic.


The newest Chinese icebreaker Xuelong-2 returned to the port of Shanghai on Monday after completing a 75-day research expedition to the Arctic, which became the 11th expedition for China. This is reported by the local information resource "Pengpai".


A team of     s s s   s s s   s s  s s    s s was on board the icebreaker during this mission. Chinese experts, indicates the resource, for the first time managed to collect samples of sedimentary rocks under the ice at a depth of 18.65 meters in the Arctic Ocean. This material will allow scientists to advance in the study of changes occurring with the ice cover of the Arctic Ocean. Other details about the research carried out during this mission have not been published.


Launched in September 2018, Xuelong-2 with a displacement of over 13.9 thousand tons. tons has a length of 122.5 meters, a width of 22.3 meters, and also a maximum draft of 7.85 meters. The icebreaker is capable of carrying on board up to 4.5 thous. tons of cargo, and the maximum speed, according to technical specifications, is about 15 knots. The icebreaker is designed in such a way that it can break through ice up to 1.5 meters thick both stern and bow, while moving at a speed of 2-3 knots. The vessel has a cruising range of up to 20,000 km. nautical miles and capable of being at sea autonomously for for 60 days.


At the end of April this year, the first joint expedition to South Pole "Xuelong-2" with acquired earlier from Ukraine the old icebreaker "Xuelong ". More than 390 researchers and specialists were on board the two ships that set off on an expedition from Shanghai in October last year. During this mission, the icebreakers covered a distance of  70,000 km. nautical miles. The expedition team completed over 60 assigned tasks related to ground and underwater research in the South Pole region.
