Scientists also advocated the openness of all collected data, which would potentially accelerate the discovery of the roots of the pandemic.

Leading molecular biologists and immunologists have called on the UN and Chinese authorities to re-investigate the history of the origin of the coronavirus, while paying equal attention to theories about its natural and laboratory origin. The scientists' open letter was published in the journal Science.

“A recent investigation conducted in China under the auspices of the WHO did not provide clear evidence in favor of the hypothesis of a laboratory or natural origin of SARS-CoV-2. We agree with the recent assessments of the head of WHO that the first hypothesis was not given enough attention, and we urge the world community to re-examine the history of the origin of the coronavirus,” the scientists write.

In March, an international group of experts report on the trip to China in January-February to investigate the origin of the new coronavirus. Experts could not come to an unambiguous conclusion. According to the final document of the mission released in Geneva, they consider the most likely scenario according to which the transmission of coronavirus occurred between animals, and then to humans, the least likely scenario is the occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 in the laboratory.

Immediately after the publication of the US report , Australia, several countries in Europe, the Republic of Korea and Japan expressed "concern about a recent study in China by WHO". The 14 countries' statement did not directly criticize the findings, but noted that the work of the experts was carried out "with significant delay", without access to full information and samples.

Similar thoughts were expressed by a group of two dozen of the world's leading molecular biologists, operating primarily in the United States and in various European countries. Among them, in particular, are: the well-known Russian-American immunologist and discoverer of the key elements of the innate human immune system Ruslan Medzhitov, as well as the American epidemiologist and immunologist Mark Lipsich and Akiko Iwasaki, whose research has played a leading role in the study of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic.

The authors of the letter have offered their assistance to WHO in conducting a re-investigation, which they hope will be organized as openly as possible key and without distortions in the direction of one or another hypothesis about the origin of SARS-CoV-2. In addition, scientists called for the release of all data collected by health authorities and research laboratories during the fight against the epidemic, which will potentially accelerate the discovery of the roots of the COVID-19 pandemic.
