Scientists made a discovery in the state of Gujarat. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE.


It is noted that specialists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Paleosciences discovered the upper jaw of a primate from the hominoids group. This category includes chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas.

their enamel and roots belonged to an adult member of the genus Sivapithecus. However, the species could not be identified. According to archaeologists, the discovered remains date back to the late Miocene period. The bones are 10-11 million years old.

It is noted that this is the first fossil of the Miocene monkey, which was found in Hindustan. Scientists say that this discovery will be important for further research in the field of the evolution of "great apes" and humans.

By the way, the first fossils of animals that belong to the Sivapithecus genus were discovered in India and Pakistan in the 19th century.
