Sichuan Province creates jobs thanks to major irrigation projects

Ding Ducai is a builder. Until 2020, he worked in the city of Zigong in Sichuan Province, but due to the pandemic, most local construction projects were put on pause. He was not left stranded by a large-scale irrigation project, which announced the recruitment of staff.

Ding Ducai, builder at Xiangjiaba Irrigation Project:

"I have been working here for a year and a half: I am responsible for binding rebar and pouring concrete. I have a stable income, but many builders are out of work because of COVID-19. If it wasn't for this project, I would also have a hard time – after all, I have to support a child and elderly parents."

More than 2,000 workers are employed in construction. Their task is to bring water from the storage of Yunnan Province to Sichuan Province. When the project is completed, the new water source will change the lives of 4 million people for the better.

Shi Ke, Deputy Director of the construction company:

"Our section is 147 kilometers long and covers three cities in Sichuan Province. The project will irrigate 34,000 hectares of farmland. The construction will be completed in 2024."

Xiangjiaba is just one of a dozen major water conservation projects in Sichuan Province.

Yan Zhaozhao, Deputy Director of the Department of Water Resources of Sichuan Province:

"12 water-related projects cover 12 cities and counties of Sichuan Province. These projects will help irrigate 270 thousand hectares of agricultural land. And this will benefit six and a half million people.

Irrigation projects create thousands of new jobs both directly and indirectly – through the development of agriculture. This is the foundation of a stable future for millions of people.

The Media Corporation of China has launched a series of programs about culture

The Media Corporation of China will show the audience more than 10 art issues, which were created by professionals and students in the field of art. Blueberries brought the residents of Huaining County out of poverty

Thanks to the construction of a blueberry cultivation and processing plant, the residents of Huaining County in Anhui Province are approaching prosperity. It is expected that the local blueberry plantations, which cover an area of about 4,000 hectares, will yield 21 thousand tons of berries this year and bring in an income of 1 billion yuan.

Blueberries are the main source of income for the region, it was she who helped thousands of local residents get out of poverty. The local authorities presented a project to grow this berry in 2004. Currently, more than 170 enterprises have been created to form a regional production chain, including breeding, planting, harvesting, processing and farm tourism.

By 2025, the county administration plans to expand the area of blueberry cultivation to about 6,700 hectares and make them a demonstration project for rural development.
