Participants of the opening in In Tashkent, the first Forum of heads of regions of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states will discuss issues of deepening mutual cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan, the forum is being held within the framework of the republic's chairmanship in the SCO on the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who delivered it in 2020 at the organization's summit in Moscow. According to the organizers, the event is intended to become "a permanent dialogue platform for deepening interregional cooperation in trade, economic, investment, cultural, humanitarian and other priority areas," as well as creating favorable conditions for comprehensive cooperation between the regions of the SCO member states.

Tashkent notes that the forum will be another evidence of the new foreign policy strategy actively pursued by Uzbekistan in recent years. In particular, it provides for the full development of trade, economic and other areas of cooperation within the SCO. In this regard, it is noted, in particular, that, despite the coronavirus pandemic, in 2021, the trade turnover of the republic with the organization's countries increased by 23.6% compared to 2020 and amounted to $ 21.1 billion.

In accordance with the program of the forum, a plenary session is planned, as well as three panel sessions on the development of tourism, agriculture and cultural and humanitarian cooperation. There will also be a business forum in the format of a round table, as well as a series of meetings and negotiations of representatives and heads of business structures. It is assumed that the format of direct contacts will allow the heads of firms and companies to exchange contacts and determine real prospects for cooperation.

Projects and investments

According to the organizers of the event, its participants, as potential foreign investors, will travel to the regions of the country for direct acquaintance with investment-attractive enterprises.

It is expected that during the forum Uzbekistan will invite partners to participate in major infrastructure projects not only on its territory, but also in Afghanistan. First of all, we will talk about the construction of the Termez—Mazar-I—Sharif—Kabul—Peshawar railway and the laying of the Surkhan-Puli-Khumri power transmission line. According to the Uzbek side, the implementation of these projects will contribute to strengthening stability not only in Central Asia, but also throughout the SCO.

Experts believe that the forum will be actively attended by representatives of all SCO member states who, in the conditions of global instability and the growing crisis phenomena in the world economy, are extremely interested in the development of transregional and intraregional cooperation and trade, as well as in the creation of new transport and logistics chains.

In particular, as the press service of the Government of Kyrgyzstan informed TASS, this country intends to actively use the opportunities provided by the forum to enhance the development of interregional trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian ties, increase mutual supplies of products, develop tourism, air travel, and the possibility of organizing recreational recreation for Russians and citizens of other countries in the resort Issyk-Kul region of the republic.

According to preliminary data, the forum will be attended by about 100 leaders and representatives of the business communities of the regions of the SCO member states.
