The UN Special Envoy for Myanmar will hold consultations with the countries of the Asian region.

The UN Chief's Special Envoy for Myanmar, Christina Schraner Burgener, will visit Thailand for consultations with representatives of the Asian region following the military coup in Myanmar. This was stated on Thursday at a briefing by the official representative of the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric.

“The UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Myanmar, Christina Schraner Burgener, will visit the region this week. First of all, she will visit Bangkok, where she will meet with representatives of the Thai authorities, and also with ambassadors who are in Bangkok, accredited in  Myanmar,   he said. In addition, visits by Burgener and to other Asian countries are being worked out. In particular, Dujarric did not rule out that a UN representative would visit China.

“She has repeatedly stated that the coordination of regional powers is needed for a firm international response to the Myanmar crisis,” he added. According to Dujarric, Shraner is "ready to visit Myanmar at any moment."

The UN representative also expressed his concern about the deteriorating security situation in Myanmar. “In the south-east of the country, thousands of people were forced to leave their homes as a result of attacks by the armed forces,” he informed.
