The participants of the summit in Astana have chosen the first Secretary General of the CICA



Kazakh diplomat Kairat Sarybai became the first Secretary General of the CICA.
The participants of the summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-building Measures in Asia (CICA) appointed Kazakh diplomat Kairat Sarybai as the Secretary General of the organization. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister - Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Mukhtar Tleuberdi at the CICA summit.
To date, Sarybai has served as the Executive Director of the CICA secretariat. In accordance with the decision taken on Thursday, this position has been renamed the Secretary General.
"In order to provide the highest support to the participating countries and advance the process of transformation [of the association], the chairmanship proposes to the summit to appoint the Executive Director of the CICA secretariat, Kairat Sarybai, as the first Secretary General of the CICA. Kazakhstan is ready to continue its work in order to provide communication and maximum professional assistance during the upcoming transformation period," Tleuberdi said.
He also summed up the results of the summit, recalling that the Astana Statement on the transformation of the CICA was adopted on Thursday. "By adopting this document, Member States have taken the first practical step in the transformation process, including renaming the position of Chief Executive Officer to Secretary General. We have set the task to the Secretary General to make proposals for consultations with the participating countries to develop a roadmap of necessary measures for the CICA transformation process," the Kazakh Foreign Minister explained.
The CICA is an interstate forum created on the initiative of Kazakhstan in 1992, aimed at creating conditions for dialogue, decision—making and implementation of measures in the field of security in Asia. To date, 28 States are members of the CICA, nine more countries and five international organizations have observer status. Since 2014, the headquarters of the CICA has been located in Nur-Sultan (Astana).
