Turkey is starting to prepare a new constitution.

Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag announced on Wednesday the start of work on the preparation of a new constitution of the country.

"We have received an instruction from the president and are starting work on the preparation of a new basic law," the minister told reporters.

The need for the speedy adoption of a new constitution of the republic to replace the current one, approved in 1982 after the military coup of 1980, was announced by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in parliament on Wednesday at a meeting of the faction of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) led by him.

He also proposed to enshrine in it the right of women to wear the hijab. In this way, he responded to the proposal of the leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Kemal Kilicdarogolu to submit a bill to parliament. "Laws can be easily changed. If you are truly sincere, let's fix this provision in the constitution," Erdogan said, adding that the issue of women wearing the hijab in Turkey has not been on the agenda for a long time.

Erdogan has repeatedly spoken about the need to adopt a new constitution of Turkey. In his opinion, this should be done by 2023, when Turkey will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the republic.
