Russia will take part in ASEAN naval exercises in the "SMOA Plus" format

Russia will take part in naval exercises organized by Singapore and South Korea as part of cooperation between the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2019.

This was announced by Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Colonel-General Alexander Fomin at a briefing for foreign attaches, summing up the international activities of the military department this year.

Fomin stressed that the Ministry of Defense continues to cooperate with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region in the format " SMOA plus" (meetings of ASEAN defense ministers with dialogue partners).

"In March 2019, we will send a group of Russian specialists (20 people) to participate in the exercise of the expert working group on military medicine chaired by Myanmar and India. In May 2019, we will take part in a multilateral naval exercise to be organized by Singapore and the Republic of Korea,” the Deputy Minister said. activities.

"Together with Laos, Russia is co-chairing the CMAA Plus expert working group on humanitarian demining. 

The Russian engineering detachment is currently taking part in demining Lao territory. At the same time, we are training Laotian sappers to work with Russian-made engineering equipment," the deputy minister added.

ASEAN includes Brunei, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. Dialogue partners are Russia, India, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

In 2018, the Russian Ministry of Defense concluded bilateral agreements on military cooperation with nine states in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, and over the past three years, 27 such agreements have been signed agreements.
