The first President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, advocated expanding the membership of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in order to strengthen the organization.

He stated this at a meeting held today in Nur-Sultan with the Prime Minister of Russia Mikhail Mishustin, RIA Novosti reports.

"As the honorary chairman of this organization, I am watching this, and we we need to strengthen this organization, we need others to be here, our neighbors... Uzbekistan, Tajikistan - they should be, we still need to work with Turkmenistan," the source quotes him as saying.

The EAEU is an international organization for regional economic integration, created on the basis of the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space and has been operating since January 1, 2015. The members of the EAEU are Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Moldova, Uzbekistan and Cuba have the status of observers in the organization.

The EAEU ensures the freedom of movement of goods, as well as services, capital and labor, and the conduct of a coordinated, agreed or unified policy in the sectors of the economy.
