Iran launches new submarine

Named Fateh, meaning "conqueror", the ship can carry cruise missiles.
The solemn ceremony of launching took place on Sunday in the city of Bandar Abbas in the southern province of Hormozgan. The ship, made entirely of Iranian components, is capable of diving to a depth of 200 meters and remaining autonomously sailing for up to five weeks, according to Iranian PressTV.
This the first Iranian light-heavy diesel-electric submarine with a displacement of 527 tons. The ship is equipped with cruise missiles that can be launched from a submerged position. Also in the arsenal are torpedoes, sea mines and guided missiles. A modern acoustic system allows detecting enemy ships at a great distance.
Speaking at the ceremony, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Khatami noted that Fateh was completely designed and built by Iranian specialists. The military leader also stressed that the submarine's armament makes it possible to hit sea targets with 533-mm torpedoes.
According to the TV channel, the new Fateh submarine is designed to patrol the Persian Gulf and ensure the security of Iranian maritime borders.
