Boxer to run for President of the Philippines

Filipino professional boxer Manny Pacquiao has officially become a candidate for the presidency of the country, Reuters reported.


He noted that he decided to put forward his candidacy, as he is a fighter both in the ring and outside it. In the elections, the athlete will represent the "Philippine Democratic Party - Power to the People" (PDP-Laban), which is the ruling party.

The Philippine presidential election will take place on May 9, 2022. Since 2016, the country has been headed by Rodrigo Duterte.

Pacquiao is the first boxer who managed to become a world champion in eight weight categories. The 41-year-old athlete spent 72 fights at a professional level. He won 62 victories, suffered eight defeats and drew two fights.
