ASEAN countries to discuss how to restore the economy after the pandemic

Vietnam will host the 37th ASEAN Summit via teleconference.

Vietnam will host the 37th ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit from 13 to 15 November via teleconference due to the coronavirus pandemic. This was reported on Friday by the Hanoi Moi newspaper with a reference to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (NRV) Bui Quoc Dung, who holds the position of Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for the ASEAN Year 2020.

“The Summit will be held online in November 2020. The agenda will include issues of building a single ASEAN community, topics of relations with partner countries, global and regional problems,” said the Deputy Minister. Separately, the leaders of the ASEAN countries will discuss the Association's joint steps aimed at strengthening the prevention and control of the coronavirus epidemic, as well as the restoration of stable socio-economic development of the countries of the region in the post-pandemic period.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations was founded in 1967 and today it unites ten countries of Southeast Asia —Brunei, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

Since the beginning of 2020, the powers of the ASEAN chairmanship have been transferred to  Vietnam on the principle of rotation. Hanoi identified as the main priority of its leadership of the regional association Hanoi the promotion of the successful implementation of the goals within the framework of the "Vision of the ASEAN Community for the period until 2025", which involves strengthening the central role of the Association in resolving regional disputes, ensuring energy and food security of the region, strengthening coordination in the  ;block framework in combating the consequences of natural disasters and in combating transnational and cross-border crime.
