A flock of swans flew in from Russia to spend the winter on a river in the northern Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido.

Whooper swans began to arrive at the mouth of the Osaru River in Date city in early October, about a week earlier than usual.

About a hundred swans have already gathered at this wintering site.

Some birds search for algae by dropping head under water, while others fly in groups to nearby rice fields and fields in search of grains.

According to local bird watcher Shinohara Morio, swans are likely to increase by about up to four hundred, and back north to Russia they will return at the end of March.
