It is snowing across much of eastern Japan. Meteorologists say the peak of snowfall should be over soon, but warn that rainfall in central Tokyo could increase to worrying levels if temperatures fall lower than expected.

The Japan Meteorological Bureau reports that a low pressure system and cold air masses have brought a lot of snow to the mountainous regions. At 6 p.m., snow in central Tokyo was 1 cm thick.

Heavy snow warnings have been issued for a large area of Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures, as well as areas of western Tokyo and parts of Shizuoka prefecture.

> As of 6 p.m. Thursday, Fujikawaguchiko in Yamanashi Prefecture had 32 cm of snow, Karuizawa of Nagano Prefecture had 21 cm, and Chichibu City of Saitama Prefecture had 8 cm of snow.
