The Japanese say goodbye to the Chinese panda, which returns to the ancestral homeland

Xiang Xiang, a 5-year-old giant panda born at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo, departs for China on February 21.
On the eve of the weekend, fans of this animal came to the zoo to say goodbye to Xiang Xiang before her departure. Xiang Xiang was born at the Tokyo Zoo on June 12, 2017 as a result of natural mating. The animal's parents are the female Shin Shin and the male Ri Ri. Since then, the young panda has been almost the main attraction of this zoo.

According to an agreement with the Chinese government, Xiang Xiang was to be returned to China when she turned two years old. But the journey was postponed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In January, the panda was quarantined, and the zoo used a lottery system to limit the number of visitors in her enclosure a few weeks before she leaves Japan.

"I didn't manage to win the lottery to see Xiang Xiang for the last time. But we still came to feel the atmosphere nearby,” the visitors said.
