Japan may lift state of emergency soon

Officials said the Japanese government is ready to lift the state of emergency imposed earlier in connection with the coronavirus in some prefectures at the end of this month, as the daily rate of new infections continues to decline.

Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare Tamura Norihisasaid that the situation has reached a stage where restrictions can be gradually eased.

"There is a risk of infection even after a large number of people have been vaccinated But we need to relax restrictions on daily activities," said Tamura Norihisa. 

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide will decide on the lifting of the state of emergency already on Tuesday after consultations with experts.

Currently, the state of emergency is in effect in Tokyo and 18 other prefectures. On Sunday, the Tokyo administration reported 299 new infections. The daily rate in the Japanese capital has remained below 1,000 for 11 consecutive days. 

More than 2,100 new cases were also reported across the country on Sunday.
