Toyota to nearly halve global production

Japanese automaker Toyota has said it will cut global production next month by 40% from its previous plan.

The company noted a shortage of components related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Toyota said it will suspend production in September at its overseas facilities, as well as at 14 plants in Japan, reducing vehicle production by 360,000 units. Some production lines will be shut down for an entire month.

The company is having difficulty securing supplies from suppliers in Southeast Asia, who have been forced to halt their production amid soaring coronavirus cases. Another factor is the shortage of semiconductors.

Two other major Japanese automakers, Honda and Nissan, have also partially suspended production for the same reasons.
