A large-capacity nuclear power plant can be built in Myanmar.

Rosatom does not exclude the possibility of building a large-capacity nuclear power plant in Myanmar. This was announced on Monday by the general director of the Rosatom State Corporation Alexey Likhachev on the air of the Rossiya-24 TV channel.

"I think they just want to, as they say, "eat the elephant in parts" and practice on, maybe, small nuclear facilities. Although there are other examples — one of Myanmar's neighbors, Bangladesh, immediately swung at two blocks of 1200 megawatts, and we do not remove the large dimension of VVER-1000, VVER-1200 from the agenda," said the head of Rosatom, answering the question about what caused the choice of ASMM for construction in Myanmar.

"The Nineties put us [with Myanmar] a little apart, but it is very important that now we are returning to this trusting attitude and to a large number of projects. And we propose, in fact, to move into the practical plane of choosing the technical appearance of the object that will be most attractive from the point of view of the Myanmar energy system, from the point of view of natural conditions, and, in fact, to begin its implementation," Likhachev said. According to him, at the stage of preparation of intergovernmental agreements, the opening of the information center, the Myanmar people "demonstrated a world record." "That is, we have not seen such speed and efficiency of decision—making as in Myanmar for a long time at this acceleration stage of any nuclear project," the head of Rosatom noted.

Speaking about other Rosatom projects that Myanmar may be interested in, Likhachev listed some of the ones implemented by the state corporation. "There are energy projects. The government of the country was very interested in our practice with wind farms. As you know, we have built in There are seven parks in Russia, the technology has been localized, the composite line allows us to make not only the heart of wind turbines, but also blades, all the necessary racks. Hydropower — small turbines for hydroelectric power plants are in the line of the Rosatom State Corporation. Both types of generation are quite interested in the Myanmar side. But we are never limited to energy applications, we have proposed, firstly, to look at nuclear technologies in breadth - these are research reactors, these are medical centers, this is the use of radiation technologies in agriculture — we have also found a great response. So, I think that nuclear technologies will be the grain, the core that will give impetus to the development of the whole ecosystem of Russian-Myanmar projects," the head of the Russian nuclear industry expressed confidence.

On Monday, Russia and Myanmar signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation on peaceful atom, involving joint work aimed at implementing a low-power nuclear power plant project on the territory of Myanmar.
