Kazakhstan takes a leading position as a supplier of agricultural products

Kazakhstan continues to play a key role in ensuring the food security of the Central Asian region and is moving to the forefront in the world in the supply of organic food. 

This was stated in his speech to the participants of the 32nd session of the FAO Regional Conference for Europe and Central Asia, Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan Saparkhan Omarov.

“In a pandemic, when global production chains and marketing of goods, including food, countries are striving for greater autonomy in the production and distribution of food, the minister said at the FAO Regional Conference, which started on November 2 in Tashkent online. “Therefore, one of the pressing problems of the Europe and Central Asia region is the transition to a comprehensive understanding of food security through the development of sustainable food systems.”

“Despite the restrictive measures associated with the coronavirus infection, Kazakhstan actively supplied food to neighboring countries, - noted Saparkhan Omarov. - For 8 months of the current year, only the markets of the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization were supplied with agricultural products for a total amount of more than 1.3 billion US dollars. According to the FAO, in 2019 alone, Kazakhstan fed more than 45 million people in the world due to the export of its wheat and flour. In addition, during the pandemic, Kazakhstan sent more than 10,000 tons of wheat flour as humanitarian aid to the countries of Central Asia (to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan - 5,000 tons each). 

The Minister stressed that despite the very difficult situation in connection with the pandemic, Kazakhstan sets the task of increasing the production of agricultural products and food products, taking into account the increasing demand from neighboring countries. development of the agro-industrial complex. For the development of the aforementioned ecosystems, issues of affordable financing, land relations, development of agro-science, digitalization of the industry, veterinary and phytosanitary safety, production of organic products, as well as issues of developing the export potential of not only raw materials, but also ready-to-eat food will be worked out.

Saparkhan Omarovalso stressed that, speaking of healthy nutrition, it is necessary to provide not only   required amounts of food, but also strive to improve the quality of nutrition. And in this direction, Kazakhstan has ample opportunities for the development of organic agriculture. Official data from the European Commission for the 2018-2019 season. in terms of exports of organic agri-food products show that among 123 countries exporting organic products to the member countries of the European Union, Kazakhstan is in 9th place. In terms of organic wheat, Kazakhstan ranks 4th among exporting countries in the EU and 6th in oilseed flaxseeds.

Congratulating FAO on its 75th anniversary, the minister said that Kazakhstan shares the conceptual approaches and methodology of FAO in matters of ensuring food safety, expects the same support from all countries and welcomes the fact that the FAO regional office plays a liaison role in this.


The FAO Regional Conference for Europe is the Organization's highest governing body for the Europe and Central Asia region. The event is attended by ministers of agriculture and other delegates from 53 FAO member countries and one Associate Organization (European Union), as well as representatives of civil society and the private sector.

The Conference discusses topical issues related to food and agriculture in the region, and identifies priority areas for FAO's work in the region. The Regional Conference is held every two years, in years when the FAO Global Conference is not in regular session.
