Georgia to buy subway cars from Russian company

Vice-Mayor Irakli Khmaladze admitted that the city could not find an alternative supplier of wagons for a similar price, so it was decided to make changes to it in agreement with the EBRD instead of breaking the contract.
The Tbilisi City Hall has decided not to terminate the contract with the Russian company Metrovagonmash for the purchase of wagons for the Tbilisi Metro, but only to amend it in agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This was announced to journalists on Wednesday by the vice-mayor of the Georgian capital Irakli Khmaladze.
"Taking into account the fact that we could not find an alternative supplier of wagons for the price that suits us, and the transition to the next stages of the tender would cause the purchase price to rise by 30-35%, we tried to complete negotiations with an existing supplier (Metrovagonmash — approx. "In such a way that our interests are insured as much as possible," Irakli Khmaladze said, "We have reached these conditions and agreed on each stage, paragraph of the agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)."
Khmaladze noted that according to the contract, the wagons will first be delivered to Georgia, put into operation and only after that the money for the purchase will be transferred. The vice-mayor added that Metrovagonmash is not under international sanctions.
The Mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, announced last November that the City Hall had decided to terminate the contract with Metrovagonmash for the purchase of subway cars. He justified this by saying that there is a possibility that the company will fall under international sanctions.
In December 2021, the Russian company Metrovagonmash won a tender for the supply of 44 wagons worth about 50 million euros, which the EBRD provided for the Tbilisi Metro.
