The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) has acquired a stake in AIFC Green Finance Centre, Ltd. (Company) from JSC Administration of the Astana International Financial Center (AIFC).

Thus, the bank is expanding its activities in the field of "green" finance. Participation in the capital of the Company, which specializes in attracting projects in the field of "green" finance and the introduction of "green" financial instruments, allows the EDB, together with the AIFC, to become an active participant in the formation of this market in the Central Asian region, ensures the introduction of new products, joint research and capacity building in the field of responsible finance.

“I am confident that the cooperation between the AIFC and the EDB will contribute to the development and promotion of green finance instruments in the Eurasian region. The joint participation of our organizations in the activities of the AIFC Green Finance Center will allow scaling up the successful experience of attracting investments in environmental and social projects of the EAEU countries and popularizing “green” finance and the “green” economy in general,” said AIFC Governor Kairat Kelimbetov.

One of the main activities of the Bank, in accordance with the current mission and Strategy for 2018-2022, is the financing of "green" projects. The Bank is systematically increasing its activity in this area, including through participation in projects implemented in the areas of renewable energy, energy saving, energy efficiency, sustainable urban and industrial development, rational use of natural resources, reduction of the greenhouse effect, waste management.

“The concept of a “green” economy is beginning to gain an increasingly prominent place in the global economy, and the EDB will make every effort to implement and develop it in our member countries: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. We consider it logical for the bank to participate in the capital of GFC, a company from Kazakhstan. The country pays special attention to projects in the field of the "green" economy, and the Eurasian Development Bank, by the way, has already taken part in financing a number of renewable energy facilities here. This includes the construction of a wind farm at the Yereymentau site and projects in the field of solar generation. I am sure that now, with the acquisition of a stake in AIFC Green Finance Center, our activity will only increase,” said Nikolai Podguzov, Chairman of the EDB Board.
