A new checkpoint may open between Russia and China in 2022.

A new checkpoint between Russia and China may open in 2022, Alexey Shilo, Deputy General Director of the Russian Railways (RZD), said at a briefing.

“In 2022, we hope that a new checkpoint Nizhneleninskoe -Tongjiang will appear, the railway infrastructure is ready, contractual relations with the owner of the infrastructure have been formalized, we are only waiting for the decision of the state organs,” he said.

According to Shilo, the opening of a new border crossing and the maximum expansion of the capacity of other checkpoints will contribute to an increase in the growth of loading.

“We completed an investment project to develop transshipment capacities, increasing them by 45% on Russian territory. A lot of things have been done in Grodekovo. In addition, we are ready to transfer the Makhalino checkpoint to round-the-clock operation, we are waiting for a decision from our colleagues , said the Deputy General Director of Russian Railways.

Earlier it was reported that the bridge crossing Nizhneleninskoe -Tongjiang across the Amur River should become the first railway bridge between Russia and China. The length of the bridge will exceed 2.2 km, of which 309 meters are on the Russian side. The bridge crossing is designed for alternate passage of trains along the railway track with track of two standards: 1,520 mm for Russian rolling stock and 1,435 mm for Chinese. It is planned to export iron ore, coal, mineral fertilizers, and forest products through the bridge to China.
